Reception desk fabrication: what goes into the price

The reception desk is the centerpiece of almost every commercial millwork package — and one of the most under-estimated items in it. Here's how a shop should break one down before putting a number on it.

It's never one line item

A reception desk quote that says "reception desk — $X" is hiding at least five separate costs: the carcass and front paneling, the transaction top, the work surface and any pedestal storage behind it, the accessible (lowered) section, and installation. Each has its own material and labour reality, and lumping them together is how shops end up building the transaction top for free.

The transaction top and stone work

The counter is usually the most expensive component per square foot. Stone, quartz, and solid surface tops should always be their own supply lines — priced from the fabricator's quote or a current slab rate, never folded into the casework linear-foot price. Waterfall ends, mitered edges, and backlighting each add real shop and material cost that a flat rate won't catch.

Accessibility and the details that get missed

Most commercial reception desks in Ontario require an accessible transaction section at a lower height — a separate piece of casework with its own top, not just a shorter version of the same line. Cable management, grommets, monitor arms, and integrated lighting are small lines that add up, and curved or radius fronts multiply shop hours the same way they do on bar work.

Estimating it from the drawings

On the drawing set, the reception desk usually appears on the plan, at least one elevation, and a detail sheet — three views of the same object. The takeoff has to count it once, at the written dimensions, with the top broken out separately. CASEWRX PRO does exactly that: it reads the set, lists the desk and its components as separate priced lines from your rate card, and flags any line that looks like the same piece read twice so it isn't double-counted. You review, adjust, and export the quote.
